Read the error codes from memory. Most errors are sensor errors today.

Rolly,
My '97 SL500 did that in downtown Atlanta...........I took it to the
dealer in Macon.......they replaced a mag pickup in the tranny that
said 8,000 rpm (fault). The computer goes to limp home mode when
things just are not right. The tranny did not know when to shift
so-----limp home mode. The fix was about $450 - and I got the tranny
oil changed in the deal. The Macon dealer is a good one.
HOLTY: IF YOU CAN PLEASE POST DTC'S(CODES), BUT I SEE A FEW ELECTRONIC
SHIFT PLATES GO BAD. IT RIDES ON TOP OF THE VALVE BODY AND IF GOES BAD
WILL GO INTO LIMP HOME MODE(1ST AND REVERSE ONLY)
INSPECT YOUR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR GEAR SELECTION POSITION. IF YOU
CAN NOT SEE P-N-D POSITIONS THIS IS A GOOD SIGN/////
