Hi, I have a recently purchased 280E 1976 RHD. I noticed after some heavy rain (I live in Ireland so this will be a regualr occurance) that the rear passenger footwell has about an inch of water in it. I have read some previous threads on this and I have been checking through the suggestions made. My question is, should there be a gasket or seal around the windscreen wiper mechanism where it protrudes from under the bonnet. On my car one of the arms does have a seal and the other doesn't. It used to be that the only thing that bothered me about the car was how often I have to go to the petrol station, now I've got a sub carpet aquarium at the back of my mind too!!! Actually, with an inch of water, and the fact that the car is about 30 years old, I would be more worried about large pockets of rust. On my car one > of the arms does have a seal and the other doesn't. Well, there should be, but I'm working from memory, as alas, the 123 our family had is no more. (Chassis rust around the rear suspension) I *did* check under the air intake grille after we bought the car just to make sure water wasn't entering from there. The grille is held in place with plastic inserts, I believe. Do make sure the drains, which empty into the engine compartment aren't clogged. Another place to check is under the battery tray, which does tend to corrode. It is also eventually where I found the leak on mine. Windscreen seals may be a culprit too, and may be a sign if the glass look cloudy around the lower edges. > Thanks > graham You're welcome. It's certainly looks like at least part of the floor was taken out and welded. I'm not sure who mentioned the cloudy glass but there is some clouding around the bottom of the windscreen. Buying Guide...... that would imply some degree of forethought, this was love at first sight. > welded. Mine was cloudy too but when I had it replaced there were no signs of rust underneath ('87 w124).
