can any one help? i have a 1989 300sl which starts and runs for 1 or 2
seconds, then cuts out.the problem seems to be no power to the fuel pump
. if power is applied directly to fuel pump then there is no
problem.this is an intermitant problem and is driving me nuts! i live
in zimbabwe and can not find a mechanic to help.

The fuel pump is powered by a relay - a switch. Relays get "tired" and
after 16 or 17 years it's time for your relay to become intermittent.

So a "fuel pump relay" is what's needed, IMHO.

For future reference, there's also an "over voltage protection relay"
which creates strange engine behavior when it fails. It has a fuse on
its top.

Hope this solves the car's problem.

Agreed

I would also place one guess on the  fuel pump relay, but not on the
OVP relay, since this has nothing to do with power to the fuel pump.

The fuel pump relay will shut, if no RPM signal occurs for 1 second. So
this indicates, that either the rpm signal is not received from the
electronic ignition unit, or the circuit inside the fuel pump relay
does not detect it (could be a bad connection in the socket to the fuel
pump relay).

thanks so much for your reply, but could you please tell me where these
things are located?
T.G. Lambach - 17 Oct 2006 06:29 GMT
We can diagnose the problem with the system but WE don't know where this
stuff is located on every model since we're not in the repair shop
business. Suggest you look where the car's fuses are kept also around
the battery area.

Post again with the question

"'89 300SL - Where is fuel pump relay located?"
