Have a 2001 E320, and soda was spilled down into the gear shifting unit.
All the dash lights lit and the message was a warning to stop.  I stopped,
and turned off the car and now it won't start.  Any suggestions?

Steve,

Same thing happened to me once.  Transmission electrical module shorted
out.  $900.

Makes one wonder why it is right under the drink holder.

It's a psychological experiment by the Germans. They are trying to
train people not to drink in their cars :)

The same thing happened to a neighbor of mine. She spilled coffee. It
was quite an expensive bill. She was furious. This design puts the
coffee holder over major electronic control devices, without a proper
liquid seal. I love Mercedes but this design is absolutely stupid IMHO.

Same happened to a friend. coffe spilled into the console of his 430 and the
car shut down. I think the bill from Benz was around a grand.
It is a stupid design but I can't figure why people need to drink (anything)
or use the phone and drive.

The module is not underneath the console... rather all those contacts that
goes to the module are there... so when you energize all the contacts...
yep... fried baby!
