How to open boot (trunk)

My friend has a 180E year 2001.  His battery is flat and so he cannot unlock
the boot (trunk) with the key fob.  Although the metal key will open his
driver door and the glove compartment it will not turn to open the boot.

This is the only metal key he has and I'm wondering if this could be a
"service metal key" which will not unlock the boot?

Could I insert 12V into the electric lock system by just jumping from
another vehicle to any +/- point on the car?

You must turn the and press the button at the same time. No easy job.

Roland,

I had a 240E so am familiar with the boot lock.   My friend's key inserts
but will not turn whether the button is pressed or not

Well, the key must turn 90 degree horizontal to vertical to release the
lock mechanism. To open turm 45degree more and press the button
including the key. If the trunk openend automatically the key slit
should be already in the vertical unlocked position.

If the key does not turn it may be the spare service station key wich
does not open the trunk.

If you want to jump start you have to attach the +cable to the starter
cable at the engine. Probably better to let it do somebody skilled with
a job assurance for the damages.

Roland thanks.  I don't want to jump start just to energise the electric
lock system so I'll just connect it to a headlamp with the light switch on I
hope I can use the radio fob to open the boot.

Seems like it'd be easier to just put a running car across this car's
battery +/- than disconnecting the headlight!

(Car I got had replaced ignition, driver door was rekeyed but the rest
of the car wasn't!  Yuck!)

-tom!

Couple of suggestions

I don't know if is the same on 180E, but for my CLK the emergency key
goes into the keyhole in the boot - and is turned 'anticlockwise' to
the left of vertical. You may have been turning it the wrong way.

Also you can feed a 'maintenance charger' into the cigar lighter
socket in the dash, to boost the battery.

There is a remote battery connect in engine compartment... Positive is in a
black case with big label on the top. and negative is a brass stub nearby on
the body. Just hook up the jumper cable and you can get the remote to
work... no need to jump start car.
