I have this problem with my 89' 560SEL. The other day it stopped working!
The day before it worked without a "cough". I already checked the fuse, it
was fine. The service manual says to check the automatic temperature switch.
It neglect to tell you how to remove it from it's place in the center
console. I've located the blower motor, can I by pass the switch and test
the blower "electrically" to see if it has power at the contacts?

TIA

Bill

Bill, without knowing anything about your setup. I would think that
the temperature switch is a bimetallic strip that acts as a on/off switch
much like for your furnace at home.  Therefore, you should be able to bypass
it BUT make sure you connect ground to ground on the motor etc.  Use an
ohmeter to find which wire of motor goes to ground.  BTW have you heard any
kind of noises at all from motor?  Could simply be seized.  I got mine going
by spinning it with my fingers with power applied (ouch!!) but it did work
then I simply sprayed WD40 liberally.

I'm not familiar with that model either, but I seriously doubt that the
temperature switch is a simple bimetalic switch.  Even in the decade
earlier cars it was far more complicated than that.   I'd be very
careful as to where and to what I applied 12V.  If you can disconnect
the power cable from the blower itself and apply power to the blower
there, that is probably the safest.

I know all about this car... When fan not blowing, I need you to do a few
test... Turn your fan speed to high.

1. Turn your ignition key back a further bit more without stopping the
engine, does it comes on? If yes, your ignition switch is bad.

2. If above not work, then with fan speed high... I want you to slap your
passenger seat lower dash hard... if fan comes on, then your fan motor
brushes is worn out.... need rebuild kit or motor.

3. If both above not working, then I want you to take the blower fuse out
and replace it with a new one.

I guess a new blower is needed. I've tried everything, but the blower
doesn't come on  :o(
