I didn't realise a change in circumstances could be so much fun!!
After my wife left her job, I've taken a new job and we've moved
house. We couldn't afford two cars, so as we've got a young daughter,
my wife's Freelander seemed a more sensible car to keep than my
Porsche 928.
I was getting to/from work in the Landi, but my wife finally decided
it was impractical not having a car. She'd set her heart on a Mini, so
I searched and finally found a '90 998 City for £800. Little bit of
rot in the doors, but otherwise sound, and only 37K on the clock!
Problem is, it's failed to start on her three times when she's been
out, so she doesn't trust it at the minute. It's always been ok for
me, so I get to drive it!
Man, I forgot just how much fun Mins are to drive (haven't driven one
for about 15 years)! We now live in a small village in Cornwall, so
most of my driving is on narrow twisty roads, and, although it hasn't
got the acceleration or top speed of the 928, the Min can hustle
around just as quick, if not quicker.
I've had cars right up my a*se going up hills, with drivers cursing,
but they all have trouble once we're away from the hills and the Min
gets the chance to do her bit on the twisties - there's times when I
haven't touched the brake pedal for miles, whereas everyone else seems
to be on a piece of elastic - they fall way behind at a corner, only
to catch up when they get to a straight (or up a hill!).
I even had a Bini crawling all over me yesterday on the way home.
Doing the 30MPH limit coming through a village, and he comes rushing
up behind me, and then tries to overtake a couple of times and fails
because of oncoming traffic. Wish I could lip-read... A few miles
further, and we're on open twisties, and I'm pulling away from him!
You could tell that the guy was having to work really hard, so I
emphasised the point by winding down the window and resting my elbow
on the door, just to show him how easy it all could be! Icing on the
cake was that we passed two other Minis coming the other way, and they
both waved at me!
These days, I get to the end of most journeys with a huge grin on my
face. Can't wait to start tinkering - bit of tuning... new wheels...
Hi-Los... "Darling, you take the Freelander today..."
Sorry 'bout the long post, but just had to share the feelings!!
Cheers!

Sounds like you've been bitten by the bug ;-)
Hope you have as much fun, as I do.
