Stage 1 boost?

Hey!

I have seen some stage 1 tuning kits advertised in mini mags, and was
wondering if there is any noticable difference? Are they difficult to fit,
or would you recommend having them fit? If yes, where would be a good place
to have this done?

I have a 998cc engine coupled to an automatic transmission. I am not
particularly interested in increasing the engine size, for insurance
reasons.

Any tips / opinions?

I recently fitted a stage 1 on my 998 mini and YES it makes quite a
difference. They arent't difficult to fit, but I personally had a pretty
hard time getting the exhaust to fit properly underneath the car, it's just
a question of time and sweat! Once you have it fitted you need to get it
tuned, and this is not easy to do by yourself, but not impossible. I had no
choice but to try and tune it by myself because here in italy it's
incredibly difficult to find someone who can tune an SU carb properly. I'm
still not done with the tuning, I'm waiting for a few needles to arrive from
the UK and I still have to get the ignition timing right. o get an idea on
the right needle you can download winsu from http://www.winsu.co.uk/ ..
you'll see...  The best thing to do is to have someone tune it on a rolling
road to get it perfect. The auto transmission is a nuisance when trying to
get torque out of an a-series, but you will still get a good improvement
with a stage 1.

Hmh. I find that a bit surprising, actually, but then again I know very
little about cars.

Is there a "standard" stage 1 kit, or are all kits different? What is
actually changed, and why does it help towards performance?

There is another thing with my AT, actually - whenever it changes up or
down - especially between 4th and 3rd gear - there is a well-audible thump
along with a thug (as if you release the clutch too fast when gearing 4 -> 3
on a MT car) that seems to originate in the engine compartment. Is this
normal, or is my AT ready for a round in the garage?

If the gear box has to be serviced: Is it worth repairing, or is it cheaper
to have a MT installed? I don't mind driving with either, but I would mind
finding my mini stranded with a shredded gearbox.
