Hi Stu,
sounds like a fusebox problems,
I had the same fault last year with my 1995 Sidewalk,
can't remember what fuse it was, but the connectors inside the fusebox where
melted, although the fuse was intact,
I fitted a separate inline fuse and have not had a problem since

I had a look at the fusebox tonight and there isn't one??? A pervious owner
has removed the fuse box and put individual fuse holders on the wires.
Therefore I need to find out what could the wires are.
I also need to know if any off the relay boxes under the bonnet are for the
fuel pump.

Theres some sort of inertia switch somewhere under the bonnet to ill the
fuel supply in the event of an accident. I've seen reports in the group
before of the same problem and the very simple fix, but since injected
Minis aren't exactly thick on the ground in my part of the world I've
never really paid any attention. Maybe a google usenet search will turn
up what you need, otherwise your Rover dealer *should* (which we all
know doesn't mean they *will*) know what it is and how to fix it.

Quite right Graham,
the inertia switch is located directly above the wiper motor, and next to 2x
relays,
the switch has a black rubber top , if it clicks when pressed,, this means
the switch was activated and this could have been the problem,
I know one of the two relays next to the switch is for the additional
electric fan fitted to the radiator,, the other could be the pump relay, but
I'm not sure,

Hi Fitzy
Looks like I owe you a pint. It was the switch with the black rubber top.
Many thanks for the info (all of you).
Could it have been triggered by being up on a jack for the ball joint
replacing or is it triggered by an impact?

Graham suggested the switch "Stu",,,,,,,,,,
I just gave you a hint as to where it lives,
and its triggered by impact
good luck
