I was just wondering if there was such a thing as an alt.autos.mini official
FAQ

... And if there wasn't, if there was any interest for me making one?

From memory (when this all flew into the whirly thing a couple of years ago
getting pretty nasty) you need to write the FAQ at the time of creating the
news group and after that it is too late.

Not at all. You can write an FAQ any time you like, but you can't change
the charter, so rather than being listed in the charter, it has to be
publicised within the group, and it has no status in defining the
channel. Feel free to write the "alt.autos.mini FAQ all you ever wanted
to know about Minis in Usenet"

Hi alltogether,

Well, rather not usenet based, there's still some sort of FAQ in the wide
world of internet. It's the I.M.E - the Internet Mini Encyclopedia - started
by Scott Beavis and now maintained by a few members of the mini-list.

The URL is - IIRC - www.ime.org.uk.

I don't think the design and functionality of that site is particularly
effective - I was planning to make a user-maintained, database driven
version of something like that. The problem with IME is that you need
specific questions you can ask the database. Personally, I am more for a
"look over a list of questions in different categories, and read an article
if something tickles your fancy" type approach.

The question, of course, is if there is a market for an AAM FAQ. It is easy
enough to start one, but if everyone uses the IME, there is very little
point.

Any ideas? Should I just set one up and let it develop, and just drop the
project later if it doesn't work, or do you reckon the whole idea is a waste
of time?

The IME was, and still is, readable in an A-Z fashion, like a paper
encyclopaedia. It has recently be "java'ised" (against my wishes) by
the guys who maintain it now, so that users can search for answers to
their questions.

In addition to the IME I am in the process of writting a mini owners
user guide 'book', which will be free, and probably in Acrobat PDF
format. Watch this space.

Yep, that's the one. I have been a regular contributor to various mini
lists and groups over the past 10 years or so. I started the IME about
5 years back because there was a lack of good reference sites to mini
technical info. The IME is a "FAQ for minis" (how to use a mini)
rather than a "FAQ for this newsgroup" (how to post messages), so if
anyone feels the need for a 'newsgroup specific FAQ' then go ahead and
write one.

I have been talking to Haje about using IME content for another FAQ,
but we have had to impose copyright restrictions due to the
sponsership deals which pay for the IME hosting costs.
