is this a new problem or have you just got the car? has it got an
aftermarket steering wheel on it? how it works is that the wheel itself
has one (or two - depending on type) "prongs" mounted on the underside of
the wheel - inside the steering wheel "boss"(centre). it is these prongs
that cancel the signal when the wheel is turned. if both - or one - of
these prong(s) are broken off, the signal will not cancel automatically.

There have been at least 3 different indicator switch designs in
Australia alone, and Mini production continued for a further 20+ years
in the UK after it ended here...
The first design in Australia had the little green light in the end of
the stalk.
The second design had the horn switch in the end of the stalk, push to
honk. This version is prone to losing the two plastic tabs on the switch
itself which cancel the indicator if the stub on the column is adjusted
too far out or if the column top bush wears too much allowing the shaft
to move to far towards the switch.
The third design in Australia had two stalks, with the wipers on the
left side. I'm not familiar with what goes wrong with these.

Sometimes they don't cancel out as the balljoints need greasing. At least
that's how it seems on my Mini, I think my balljoints need renewing as the
indicators fail to cancel themselves too, but I know that after the
balljoints are replaced the indicators will then cancel themselves, at least
they have done in the past.
