Best Carburetor for a Mini?

Hello, ive been lurking for a while, so far ive found this group to be very
helpful in teaching me about Mini's. I have a question to ask, Im fiarly new
to cars, and have very little knowledge about them, so please bear with me.
I own a Morris Mini Classic 1965, and my engine blew up recently (it was a
998cc), the head cracked, water got in, and my temp gague must be broken
because I didnt pick up on it until far too late, so Ive been working on
getting a new Head, Block and Gearbox (So far I have a Good gearbox made up
from a Cooper S (Not sure if this is the right one, sorry, im new to Minis)
but im told its a good gearbox, but no Synchro, an 1100 head, and an 1100
block) Now, im going to need a new Carburetor (Sp?), seeing as my old engine
was 998 and the new one will be 1100, I dont think I can use the old
Carburetor, and im told that a Weber is the best one, but I wouldnt know
where to start looking, or what to look for. I was hoping you could help me
as to what I should be looking for.

Im sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a search for Weber and
Carburetor, and nothing came up, so its probably my POS Outlook not working
right. Additionally, whats a good Newsgroup reader? I used to use
Forteagent, but that was several Formats ago, and I never picked it up
again.

Weber is a bit too mutch for a standard engine. I would put the carb of your
998 cc with a other needle(When they do the setup on the rolling road)
Hif44 is good too.

I daresay a HIF44 is a bit much for a 998 too!

best caburettor depends entirely on what you want to do with teh
car/engine/dancing monkey...

His new engine was 1100 and maybe your right that it's a bit big but if he
later chanches some stuff hese already equipted for somemore .

In that case, DEFINITELY an Impco 125 and a J converter. At 30c/l for
LPG against $1/l, there's no excuse to be using those horrid primitive
petrol carburettors!

Graham, also in Melbourne, whose Mokematic ran an Impco 125 & J and a 70
litre stainless LPG tank, for a bizarre range at about 3c/km.

Impco 125, with a model J converter.  8-)

The carb of the 998 will be perfectly fine for the 1100 engine.
BMC/Morris/Austin all used the 1"1/4 SU on the whole A series range for
years with out any major issues. You will need to overhaul your carb and
probably fit a different profiled needle in the carb, but none of this is
hard to do. I would highly reccomend you join the local Mini Club, there is
a very good one in Melbourne. Good guys to talk to are Macs Minis and Link
Automotive or Northern Mini Spares. I have dealt with all 3 of these
companies over the years whilst Ive been visiting Melbourne and always found
them to be very helpful and good to deal with.
But first stop for you should be the local Mini Club, you will find there
will be members who have dealt with this issue many times, after all your
not the first, nor the last person to convert his Mini 1000 to an 1100
