Terminal Oil Leak???

Ok folks I've just tried to carry out a full service on my sister's/nephew's
1992 Mini British Open Classic LE and whilst attempting to put in fresh oil
(Castrol GTX like it matters anyway), I heard a strange glugging noise and
found my garage floor becoming awash with oil.

Ok we've been aware there was an oil leak, well oil has been spraying itself
around the engine bay since the car was bought in December 2001 and a garage
reckoned it was due to a worn drive-shaft seal.  But after sticking my head
underneath and looking up the engine whilst my wife poured a little more oil
in, it's clear the leak/torrent is coming from above the drive-shafts and in
the vicinity of the oil pump.

So is it an engine out job as the Haynes manual claims and why should the
seal or oil pump fail?

Any help appreciated, but it looks like my sister's in for a big garage bill
I expect?

I'm now getting paranoid and wonder if I fitted the rocker cover gasket
correctly
after adjusting the tappets.  Well I did use some instant gasket to help
hold the bloody
thing in place whilst I lowered it, so I can't imagine that would be the
cause?

Well, I don't know... there's always something to be said for being
"complete" at anything.  ;-)

Here I was thinking perhaps you had taken offence at a simple handling error
at your news server but in fact you're just going around being a cock to
everyone.

I like to think this news group is a great place to get help and offer
advice and the people here are genuinely helpful.  If you want to start sh.t
go to another news group.

If the leak is that major you are bound to have noticed it before.

Take the air filter housing off (assuming the standard one) so you can see
the back of the rocker cover, my money is that the rocker cover gasket moved
slightly, doesn't seal and you are pouring fresh oil straight down the back
off the engine - done that myself once!  Make sure you wash the oil from the
exhaust manifold as best you can before starting, and when you do start make
sure it's outside coz it's gonna smoke from the engine for a while until
it's burnt the remnants off.

Shaun.

Cheers Shaun, turned out the rocker cover gasket wasn't sealing properly
after all.  Well I bought a new thicker one and that went on a treat.

Funny how these things happen when you consider I've done the same job
hundreds of times, oh well at least it was a cheap fix.

Your sister is also your nephew?????

I thought you were from Wales, not Alabama!

The oil pump is deep inside the motor!

Anyway, you've got a major leak which dumps oil straight out on the
floor when you pour it into the rocker cover, but only a minor to
moderate oil leak when the motor runs....

Where is there oil when you're filling it, but not when it's running?

Rocker cover gasket is one strong candidate - if the back edge comes
adrift, und normal running you'll get a bit of leaking there, but when
you fill the motor via the rocker cover, it will overflow out the leak.

Another possibility is the tappet cover gaskets.

Don't pull the engine out until you've determined where the leak is.
Diagnosis without dismantling is much easier than unnecessary
dismantling and reassembly!

> and why should the seal or oil pump fail?

It really sounds like you haven't got the diagnosis bit worked out yet.

No way to tell until you determine where the oil is getting out.

Ah hah!

If the long straight section of the gasket above the manifolds falls
inward and doesn't seal right, what symptoms do you think you would get?

8-)

Stop panicking and go and have a good look at it.
