Hi,

My mini has just failed its MoT on the strangest thing....

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing my windscreen wipers to
stop, no matter what position, when the control on the steering column is
returned to the 'off' position. I have flicked through Haynes and it
suggests it could be the limiting switch.

Does anybody have any other ideas or experience of this ???

Thanks in advance.

Most likely that it is the earth wire to the wiper motor body, it should be
quite obvious to see if its corroded, remove it and clean the connections
and see if it makes a differance.

There is a little plastic switch on the motor that allows the parking
mechanism to work. The switch is turned on and off by a little cam on the
main gear wheel in the motor. The switch fails.  It happened to mine but it
wasn't picked up on the MOT. I am surprised that yours was as wipers that
self park were not introduced until the MkII so should be allowed.

I got fed up of parking mine in the correct place by using the main column
stalk so I went down to the local scrap yard and got a replacement switch ?3
(it just clips off).

It depends on the year of the car.  Both mk MK1's (1962 and 1964) had
non-parking wipers as standard!

There's a "park switch" in the wiper motor which detects when the wipers
are at the right point to stop.If it dies then they just stop dead in
their tracks when you turn them off.

Obviously over 40 years of production there have been a few different
wiper motors, so it's hard to be more specific.

Thanks for all the advice, for anyone that is interested it was the park
switch contacts which had corroded away. I have tracked one down and should
have it sorted very soon...

Thanks again

My wiper blades have done this since I bought the car - I thought it was
supposed to be like it!!!!

I'll check the park switch tomorrow.
