I am hoping to build a turbo motor for my Mini, and would I be right in
thinking that the modifications to a standard 1275 would be a turbo head,
turbo pistons and a different camshaft?

I already have a complete set of Metro turbo components, I.E. manifolds,
carb, actuator, various plumbing, etc.

Many Thanks

Don't forget to make sure you can stop it too !

Good luck and enjoy it when it's done

I think the head has sodium cooled valves that are slightly bigger than
standard - but that might be the only difference.

You'll also want a turbo head gasket, which are a bit more pricey.

And I think you need to cut and patch up the bulkhead to fit the turbo &
manifold.

I knew about the gasket and the box section needed in the firewall, thanks.

Specifically the engine modifications required were my main concern.

I suspect I'll try and source a metro gearbox too.

Was the Metro Turbo 'box 5 speed by any chance?

NO the trurbo was 4 speed :(

If you want a 5 speed you will have to pay ???? for it

How about a later metro 'box?

A chum of mine had a '90 metro and that had a 5 speed. Would that bolt
straight on?

No, because it's a K-Series engine 1.1 or 1.4, completely different animal.

There is no cheap way to get a 5 speed box on a Mini. The only way is the
EXPENSIVE aftermarket boxes from Jack Knight or MiniSport. The problem with
those are that the 5th gear is actually 1:1, with all the other gears
shorter, so there really isn't much benefit for everyday usage.

Just stick with a good 4 speed minis dont need 5 speed boxes

Only fair to warn you, I knew two people who bought young Metro Turbos, and
both hated them.
Not nearly as quick as they expected, irritating noises. Big disappointment.
One guy went back to a 1380 mini, which he reckoned was more drivable and
more fun,
the other got a Golf GTi

Get the brakes, forget the engine, was the verdict.

I think that the crank is different too, stronger on turbos. The distributor
also has a different advance curve.
You will also need the turbo fuel pump and the piping from the fuel tank
needs modding.
Try to get hold of a Haynes Metro manual, shows the fuel system in there.
I recommend you find an old turbo unit and rebuild it
You dont need to use the Metro ECU.
I had a Metro Turbo that had been modded by Swiftune, approx 125bhp, went
like hell, loads of torque makes it easy to drive, no small power band as
normal with high output A Series.

Cheers
