I'm a novice with cars and I had to change the head gasket on my 78 austin
mini with an HS4 carb.  which meant that I had to take the carb off.  in the
process of taking it off the hose with the spring on the jet came out of the
float chamber without the nut being unscrewed.  my problem is that I can't
get the hose to stay back in.  does that mean I broke it, or is there some
trick to get it to stay?  thanks in advance.

The fuel feed from the float chamber to jet is held in at the bottom of
the float chamber by a rubber compression gland/washer.  As you tighten
up the brass union, it compresses the washer which should seal the pipe
in.

Unscrew the brass union nut and check the condition of the rubber
sealing gland.

So if the pipe came out of the nut, does that mean I need to get another jet
assembly?  I think I can see the washer seated in the float chamber.  Not
really sure though.  I could take a picture of it if that would help you
help me.

No, it should be possible to re-fit the pipe.  It's a long time since I
used an HS-series carb (I have HIF series on the cars now, which uses a
completely different float chamber).

If the carb is off the car, unscrew the brass nut and carefully prise
out the rubber seal.  It should be obvious how it all goes together.

There is usually a brass washer between the gland nut and the rubber
seal so that the seal doesn't get twisted as you tighten up the nut.

Got some exploded diagrams of the su carbs if you need one, there in PDF
format,

Steve.

Yes, please.  Anything that will help, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks.

And Elvis was sitting next to patrice in the spaceship, which I thought
was kinda weird, but then they turned to me and said:

Have you lost the short length of metal tube that is pushed into the end
of the plastic pipe?

If that's missing, the gland won't grip the pipe properly.
