Time for some painting

The mini could do with a bit of a touch up here and there and so could
my bike (ZX6R) so rather that pay good cash money to someone else I'd
rather do the jobs myself (The mini has all its repairs done by my good
self and the bike was a write off when I got it and so I built that
myself too)
So I'm in the market for a compressor and some spray gear.
As I was a bike and car mechanic for 4 years the mechanical side of
things is no problem at all but when it comes to paint I ain't got a
clue but I'll soon learn (I'm not expecting show condition paint work
here just enough to make it look tidy)
So can anyone tell me what spec compressor I'm ideally looking for ?
It's obviously not going to get too much use so should be small and at
least semi portable. Ideally with enough guts to run a windy gun, air
hammer etc aswell as paint.
Would a 7 cfm compressor with a 25 litre tank be enough for this ?

Thanks for any help

I was just on my way to buy a compressor for spraying when you posted
this. I got a 2bhp with a 50 litre tank for £129 plus VAT from Jawel.
The compressor seems to be able to keep up with the gun doing half the
car at a time, provided I charge up the tank before I start.
Its got wheels at one end and s handle at the other and weighs 32kg so
it is reasonable portable.

B.A.P C47-50L ? Just had a look at their site, well that sounds fine by
me so I'll see if I can go and get one :)
Will it fit across the back seat of a mini or should I borrow someone
elses motor to go and pick one up ?

Cheers David

The guy in the shop said that they had been using one for 6 years
without problems for making up aerosols and spraying sample panels.
It fitted on the back seat of a Rover 218, but I think you will have a
struggle to get it past the tipped up front seat.

Thanks again

I'd be tempted to take the front seat out to save the delivery charge.
When I had Minis they where only held in with 2 bolts.

Take the seat out; it's easy.

I've already got a 1.5HP, 7cfm, 25-litre compressor, and was wondering if
I'd be able to spray my mini with it? It came with a cheap and chearful kit
which included a spray-gun, although it's probably not a particularly good
one, so I'd invest in a decent one if the compressor's up to the job.

Has anyone tried using a small compressor like this to spray with?

Hi,
I used to use  a compressor this size for all workshop jobs, and i found it
was OK for spraying if you were prepared to wait for less than half a minute
for the tank to refill after spraying an area about the size of a Mini door.
It also depends on how your spray gun is set up as to how much air it uses.
A wide fan uses a lot more air and also makes a lot of overspray, which is a
waste of paint and can leave a poor finish if this drying overspray lands on
an area recently sprayed.
Too narrow a fan can lead to paint runs.

Keith
