Unleaded fuel & engine serial number

I have read that use of unleaded fuel is acceptable if the valve seats have
had metal inserts installed, and that the inserts started being installed at
some point in 1989.

There is a list of engine s/n's posted, that will help me identify whether
my engine is pre or post inserts, but I cannot find the serial number
anywhere on my engine.  At least any number that starts with 99H.  Can
anyone tell me where the serial number is supposed to be?

Engine number is on the block, a little plate riveted to the block
right under the temp gauge sender on the head. If your engine has been
rebuilt, often they plane the top of the block and don't bother to
refit the plate, so the engine number gets lost.

I have been running a highly modified Cooper S engine for years
without the hardened valve seats, with no seat recession or other
adverse results. My own opinion is that the hardened seats are not needed.

Rocky,

checked the area where you described to look for serial number.  There is a
plate there, but what confused me is that I do not recognize it as falling
in the traditional range of 99H numbers. Mine starts with BHM 1439 1XXXXX.

Any clues?

Well that explains the funny number.  Now to see if it has the upgraded head
or not.  At least in France they still sell leaded fuel, so there is no
panic.

Oh no they don't. What they sell as "Super" is unleaded with an additive.

Switch to french:
Va voir la FAQ de la Mini www.mini.online.fr/faq.htm. Tu as aussi plein
de forums sur le web, dont www.minicorp.net et une mailing list en
français sur www.mini.online.fr.

Merci pour l'info. Je pense que je ferai le plein avec le SP98.

Looks like I will be switching to unleaded SP98.  Perhaps an occasional
super fill up here and there.

That's not my area of expertise, unfortunately, but sounds like that's
the engine number. Here's a suggestion: join the yahoo minElist and
ask the question there. That list is the main source of arcane Mini
information these days.

Minis started being fitted with unleaded compatable engines in march april
1989, though leaded engine models were still being produced or sold at the
time aswell. Iwas working for Rover at the time in the specification
services department and I purchased one of the first unleaded minis in April
1989.

I recall that the engine numbers did start with 99H but it was the fourth
letter that denoted whether it was unleaded or leaded. I think 99HD was
leaded and 99HE was unleaded.
