Hi, and thanks to all again.

Tests done as suggested revealed a problem with the engine
"lower-end".
The crank moves approximately 5mm laterally!!
i.e. Using a lever I was able to move the fly-wheel in and out by
approximately 5mm.  Thrust washers?

Have removed the engine and gearbox.
Took +-3 hours for everything and 1 hour!! to remove the pin on the
"collar" holding the gear lever rod connected to the gearbox.

Questions: (1)Any ideas on what I will find once I get to the
crankshaft. What parts and machining work to expect?
(2) What additional work can I do since the motor is out. ps. The head
has been "done" recently and do not want to touch it again unless
necessary.
(3) I did have quite a severe oil leak. Obviously most gaskets will be
changed, any seals which are not part of a gasket kit to replace?
It did seam that the leak (or one of them) was from the area where the
side shaft exits the engine/transmission.

That's about the thickness of the thrust washer!

Big wear grooves on the flywheel side of the centre main in the block
with matching wear on the crank. I think +.030" thickness thrust washers
were/are available

Lighten flywheel, balance, better cam, rebore. The head will have to
come off because of the mess from the machining.

This oil seal won't be in the kit, nor will the gasket under the side
cover that the seal fits into.

You can get to the engine bay so you can paint everything if you want to.
Renew any rusty electrics and old fuel/brake pipes.  Paint the subframe.
Paint the engine.  Replace the fuel pump if it is old....

<That's about the thickness of the thrust washer!>
Boy, were you right. At first I couldn't find any thrust washers. Then
by moving the tran. around I could hear metal "sounds".
I managed to "fish" out 2 halves easily, the 3rd I battled for some
time.
The 4th had move sideways into the "diff" but also eventually came out.
The good news NO! damage to the gears.

Thanks for your comment.

Hi, Is there any damage to the thrust faces on the crankshaft?
