when I picked my W reg car I went right over it with the dealer. And
rejected the car becuase of those issues, so he took it back and had it all
repainted under neath and inside the guards etc. Also I had it totaly
waxoiled...4 and a bit years down the road she still looks and is
perfect...mind you I did do the Iti Job and then shipped her back to NZ...we
dont have salt on our roads

My Mpi is no different. The underside is good till now, but rust started
underneath the headlights (folded piece of bodywork), the interior near the
pedals (had some door seals leakage, causing wet spots), and underneath the
rubber of the front windscreen (quite badly, but I spotted it while the rust
was still under the rubber). So beginning of past summer started with a
de-rusting of my 4 year old car.
After derusting I send it to a local company (Netherlands) that treated the
mini with tectyl/dinitrol All cavities, and wheel-wells, fenders, sills,
doors, subframes and a complete underside protection. Cost 350 euros but
should keep te car safer for a few years.

I had this on my 2001 Classic mini 7. I had to laquer the underside when new
and waxoyle it and fill cavities etc. Even so, the headlamps have a small
spot under them, the front bumper has corrosion, and i have had to repaint
the front valance lip. I am very worried about the floor though, that anti
noise stuff hides a lot of bodywork and i am always concerned about rust
there!

I wasn't an isolated case then! I would have been suprised if I was that
unlucky knowing Rovers reputation.
I'm planning on getting the car waxoyled every autumn from now on to try and
keep on top of it....
The one thing that still irks me more than a little is that it was purchased
through John Cooper Garages originally. You would have thought they would
have given the car the once over when they were swapping bits of the engine
and brakes over.....
You live and learn I suppose!
Cheers
James

Sounds like a "conspiracy theory" there fragged,
I don't think our beloved minis needed any help from bmw,

hi
no really I can say without any shadow of a doubt that the paint used on
late mini causes rust. Having photographed minis straight from the
transporter Pre registration and with my own restoration of a 92 cooper it
is clear to me that there is a fundamental difference in the paint used ,
I have owned minis for over 20 years and restored many and never seen rust
worm under the paint in the boot EVER until i bought a bmw made classic
mini.
