Tuning problems- carb needle

Hey all,

After much umming and arring I decided that I better get the tuning checked
on the car, it is drinking fuel like it is going out of fashion (done 1/2
tank in 30 miles... owch). The car is an L reg (94) Mayfair with a few
engine mods.

The setup as it is (when I bought it) HIF44 carb, with a mini spares inlet
manifold (I think), cat removed, boxter exhaust. Engine has been bored out
to what size I don't know (I can't remeber what the number was on the piston
when I changed the head gasket but something tells me it might have said +40
or something) and also it has a K+N Filter, the cone type.

Anyway a friend was looking at it today, basically it is very inefficent and
it runs a bit sluggish, took the carb to pieces to see what the needle was
to see if it can be changed. He took one look at the needle and said 'oops'
It is bent.... very slightly but there is a definant bend in it. So I need a
new needle, the current needle is an AAA, but my friend believes that it is
the wrong needle for the setup (apparantly it is very close to being stage 1
tuning kit).

So really given this info, if I changed the needle over, what one should it
go for.

Thanks in advance

Nick

The HIF44 is a 1.75" carb, but the AAA needle is for a 1.5" carb.  Are
you sure it's an AAA, or is the carb perhaps an HIF38?

This should help you with selecting the correct needle for HIF carbs:-

The needle you need is an AAU.

Your engine is MORE than stage 1 if it's been bored out +40... More like
stage 3 perhaps.

Is the engine running "lumpy" in other words whats it like in traffic? does
it tick over at around 800-1100 revs or higher, if you dont have a rev
counter does it sound like its running fast on idle?

The original engine should be a 998cc but if its been bored out its probably
more like an 1100-1198 possibly.

If its the original engine/block I dont think you can go much bigger on the
bore sizes without changing the block.

Also.. it does seem rough at times, mostly when starting cold.... but it
does seem a bit lumpy from time to time.

The idle actually is quite slow at times... dropping almost down to 100rpm

It is an AAA needle, and it is also a 1.75" carb definantly.
My friend believes that the previous owner was given the wrong needle

I suggest you download a copy of WINSU and use the 'suggest needle'
option (or whatever it is called).  You could start with a BBZ which
should get the engine running OK.

If the small tag under the float bowel (AUD*** number) is still there
have a look at it to reference the parts or you can still use this site
for the correct parts for the carby.

http://www.burlen.co.uk/burlen-user/default.asp?Category=burlen&Service=Parts

It will give you rich standard and week needles.

Hi Scott, can you accept Paypal yet to pay for the full version (or do
you still need a cheque?)
