Removing Valve Guides

Rob - 24 Dec 2004 13:17 GMT How about a press and measure the guide before its removed and cut a small piece of pipe to make a depth stop when pressing the new guides back in.

I'm assuming you don't have a lathe. With course emery, reduce the OD by about 5 thou. Take an old valve and put a nut on the stem followed by the slimmed down guide. The nut is to stop the guide splitting when you hammer the fitted guide out. You now have a cheap stepped drift. As someone said, drift them out downwards into the combustion chamber. Remove and replace one guide at a time. You can set the fitted distance by using a straight edge across the other guides. Now you see why you only change one at a time. Don't forget that the valve seats will probably need cutting after fitting new guides. It is also a good idea to replace the rockers if they are worn. If the rockers have hollows in the pad that bears on the valve stem, they will exert a great deal of side force when they come to the end of their arc. You may think that they would only bear over the same area as before but if the seats have been cut or ground, the valves will be slightly further into the head so upsetting the old geometry.

I don't mean to bug you guys too much more lol I just got my old block that I had up at my brothers and am trying to figger out what it is for sure as I was told the head I got was a 997 cooper head and it's a 998 cooper head.. I tried to find the info on Google but no real luck. I think the this motor had a ID plate on it but it is missing. the cam looks more aggressive when I put it beside the one out of the 998 block I pulled out of the car. The old guy I got them off about 10 bloody years ago its rebuilt and I only paid $200(I think my dad talked him down to 175 can't remember for sure) for the head, block, duel carbs, header, tranny so even if it is not anything great still was not a bad deal. The only nubers I can find on the block are 12a497 208 under that 10 on the far side from the 12a497 says 220 under that a 8.

1 - 2 lbs. cubed meat (human flesh, chicken, turkey, beef...) 1 -2 lbs. coarsely chopped vegetables (carrots, potatoes, turnips, cauliflower, cabbage...) Bell pepper onions garlic ginger salt pepper, etc. Olive oil butter

Pre-mie pot pies, beef stew, leg of lamb, stuffed chicken, roast pork spiral ham, Cranberry pineapple salad, sweet potatoes in butter, vegetable platter, tossed salad with tomato and avocado, parsley new potatoes, spinich cucumber salad, fruit salad Bran muffins, dinner rolls, soft breadsticks, rice pilaf, croissants Apple cake with rum sauce, frosted banana nut bread sherbet, home made brownies Iced tea, water, beer, bloody marys, lemonade, coffee
The guests select food, beverages, silverware... everything from the buffet table. They move to wherever they are comfortable, and sit with whoever they choose. Provide trays so your guests will not spill everything all over your house from carrying too much, nor will they have to make 10 trips back and fourth from the service stations.
Roast Leg of Amputee
By all means, substitute lamb or a good beef roast if the haunch it is in any way diseased. But sometimes surgeons make mistakes, and if a healthy young limb is at hand, then don?t hesitate to cook it to perfection!

Holiday Youngster
One can easily adapt this recipe to ham, though as presented, it violates no religious taboos against swine.
1 large toddler or small child, cleaned and de-headed Kentucky Bourbon Sauce (see index) 1 large can pineapple slices Whole cloves
Place him (or ham) or her in a large glass baking dish, buttocks up. Tie with butcher string around and across so that he looks like he?s crawling. Glaze, then arrange pineapples and secure with cloves. Bake uncovered in 350? oven till thermometer reaches 160?.
Cajun Babies
Just like crabs or crawfish, babies are boiled alive! You don?t need silverware, the hot spicy meat comes off in your hands.
6 live babies 1 lb. smoked sausage 4 lemons whole garlic 2 lb. new potatoes 4 ears corn 1 box salt crab boil
Bring 3 gallons of water to a boil. Add sausage, salt, crab boil, lemons and garlic. Drop potatoes in, boil for 4 minutes. Corn is added next, boil an additional 11 minutes. Put the live babies into the boiling water and cover. Boil till meat comes off easily with a fork.
Oven-Baked Baby-Back Ribs
