I am considering parting with my one of a kind Mini.... Its been my
dream to stop the British Car Enthusisast in their tracks at a show
with this car but I am conceding that it might be a long time comming.
The only time this car made it to a show in North America it was in
the spectator parking with lot and had a crowd form around it.
Its a 1983 Austin Mini Metro bought new in Iseral and managed to make
it to most europen countries as its owern oved around. It was
eventually parked in north america when the owner's family got to big
and that where I found her a couple years later. I got her road worthy
and drove it for a seaon before parking her.
My research as indicated on 3 ever made it to north america
permentanly and one of those most likely crashed racing (the other
is????). This car needs some work and if it were up to me it would be
restored from the ground up to original condition. However I am
conceding I do not have the time to do it or the money to pay some
else to do it for me nor will I drive it till is is done so changes
are shell just sit which isn't good.
If this sounds like a project that up your ally and you have passion
to stand out in the crowd. Then email me, I can provide picts and more
info - however, this will not be a fire sale I need a fair price
(don't know what that is yet) and know it won't get cut up.

America already had enough truly appalling cars...

Seriously, a 21 year old Metro?
It's probably worth about 10 quid in the UK.

yeah - do you realise how much these cars are laughed at - the only good
thing about them was there was plenty of MG metros and turbos made - for
engine transplants for our beloved minis!

Wow - I'll concede that the states has enough truly ugly cars -
Detroit adds to this each model year (for the most part), and its true
that Metros are a dime (or Quid) a dozen in England - but LOL, I
expected people to be a little more open minded or are we all just
slaves to pop culture...
The advantage of the Metro was increased interior space with very
similar performance to a Mini 1000. Most people mistake it for an early
VW Golf at first. And who wouldn't want to have a one of a kind at a
British Car show without spending a fortune to be that unique.
Or do I just have a passion for the out cast ugly duckling?

Sorry mate, but a Metro has to be high on the list of the worst cars I
have ever driven... and that was a high end 1.3 with all the extras in
nearly new condition. All the faults a Mini with none of its charm or
handling delights. It may have rarity value in the US, but frankly
that's all it has going for it.

But a Metro in the US is as 'unique' as a Yank tank in the UK. And compared
to most Yank tanks a Metro is like having small sportscar! BTW my Dad had
an '82 Metro HLE (998cc) from new and it was/is simply the best and most
reliable car he ever owned and would easily do over 100mph. It *never* went
wrong and bar normal service items it only ever had one rear box, one
battery and a clutch - all in 8 years of ownership and over 120k - he would
have kept it longer but a stupid woman rear-ended it so hard the floor was
bent near the rear seats.

I have an L reg metro that I love. Not as much as the Pickup but still love
it. It is a total work horse which has never gone wrong!! It is also like
a tardis. I can fit more amps and guitars into it that my Brother in Law
can into his Mundaneo. Only my father in law can carry more of the bands
gear and that is in his Daewoo Muso - range-rover-esque thingy.
I drove it all around France this summer and back up the north doing a few
thousand miles. Not a problem!! Managed to carry back 150 bottles of wine
and two crates of beer as well as all of our luggage.
I put it down to mini owner prejudice. Leyland tried to kill off the Mini
with the metro. If you ignore that it is a great car.

Don't be silly, at US petrol prices it's not even worth 10 quid.
I offer US$350 but only if it has an MG engine in it to be harvested for my
Moke.

I must admit, I also like the Mini Metro...!!!
I went from owning five Minis to five Metro's albeit all but one was an MG
variant the other being a Turbo (VERY QUICK) once the boost was turned up
and turbo started to produce power at around 11000 RPM!!!! for some reason
kept blowing turbo's and head gasket's (hmmmmmmm!!??) LOL
Have now gone back to owning a classic Mini as a "fun" car and only use it
in the Summer and not Winter...
I agree the Metro must be a unique car in the states especially as old as
that one.
Just a question any rust yet??? LOL
Ryan Shaw - 03 Dec 2004 00:22 GMT
going back to the initial post - the title is "one of a kind mini" yet the
post says that there is at LEAST 3 in america that jelson knows about and
bloody tens of thousands in the uk - anyone find that ironic!?! i do!

You mean the rust isn't original? ;-) Actually thats the reason I
haven't done the restoration myself - I'd post a picture here if I
could, I've seen picts of metro's and mini's alot worse than my Metro
- but I don't have paitence for body work. So my goal was to strip it
right down and fix it right - and then maybe even power coat it (a
friend is planning that for a chevette so I was waiting to see how it
went). Over all my metro isn't in terrible shape just needs TLC I
can't give it right now :-(
As for my "ironic one of a kind friend" - check any auto classifieds
in North America and you'll find all sorts of Unique cards - Hondas &
Mustangs to BMW's and Porches - by all accounts this really is one of
a kind in North America. Tell you what - find one the other 2 (which
I've tried and can't) or import one and I'll happily retract the one
of a kind statment.
