Hi,

I have a 1988 Mini Red Hot and I wondered if it is possible to find
out which of the 1000 made my Mini is (i.e 10 of 1000). Does anybody
know how I could find out?

Thanks in advance,

Si

Write to the bloke at BMHT (Rover Museum).
Im sure someone here would be able to provide the contact details.
Anyway, carlsberg or whatever his name is will need your chassis number and
registration number, and a few quid, you should get a letter and a fancy
cert.

Write to Heritage?  They'll often tell you things like that.  It might
even say on a Heritage certificate...

Unfortunately it seems no-one, not even British Motor Industry Heritage
Trust (BMIHT) or Rover seems able to verify 80s Minis exactly as they didn't
keep any definitive production records after the late 1960s, and the Limited
Edition cars where built alongside other ordinary Mini Citys/Mayfairs and
didn't have any specific identifying chassis numbers.  You can't even get a
pattern out of engine numbers either, as these seem almost random, i.e. a
late chassis/VIN having a low engine number, and an early chassis/VIN having
a high engine number.  I guess this is due to the engines being common to
the Metros at the time and certainly the numbers become easier to understand
once the Rover Metro with the K-Series was introduced.

I know that doesn't help much but it is the best anyone can do and I seem
now to be an 'expert' on these things!

Agreed, and I'd also add that you must take the production figures ("1000
Red Hot") with a pinch of salt. There is a big confusion between total
production and what was sold in each country. The "Red Hot" and "Jet Black"
series are actually quite common as far a limited editions go. There must
still be at least 10 to 20 still running in my area (which is a large city
in the south of France). That certainly doesn't make them rare.

The same goes for Monte Carlo Coopers. Someone here said that there were
only 200 made. This is patently wrong, as I have been able to count at least
20 of them quite easily on web sites and through friends and local mini
clubs.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. The Mini in question is in beatiful condition and
has only 7000 genuine miles on the clock. It is fully orginal inside
and out right down to the grille badge(!). I would like it to go to
the right owner at the right price. Could anbody advise on value and
the best route to sell the vehicle?

Thanks in advance,

Si

A very good point Nicholas and one I forgot!  Even the UK Mini magazines and
books get the UK and total production figures mixed up.  For many countries,
especially the obscure far eastern ones e.g. Taiwan - and yes they did sell
Mini's there! - and some of the smaller European markets, the numbers of
cars are just unknown and anyones guess.

The Paul Smith is another one like that.  Offically Rover said their were
200 cars for the UK and then they said 300...  and then who knows!!
