Hi all,
Car is a L-reg (94) Mayfair. Seem to have a few electrical problems (mostly
a few shorts which I have stopped temporarly by pulling some of the loom
through the now vacant radio hole)

Behind my dashboard is a smallish black box wich seems to have a very large
amount of wires running into it, connected via a multi-plug thingy. The car
I believe used to have an alarm but I don't think it works any more, little
red led on the dashboard, and also there is an unconnected switch on the
bootlid. What is this box though, is it the reminants of the alarm system? I
tried to start the engine with the plug disconnected and it didn't start,
but it did continue to run when I pulled the plug out after starting the
engine. Also this box has what looks like a thin copper wire coming out
surrounded by a clear plastic tube, aerial for the alarm remote?

Any idea what this box is?

Thanks
Nick

Sounds like the old alarm/isolator. Presumably the unit allowed the engine
to continue running once started so that it didn't cut out if the remote got
pressed accidentally.
I had to remove a similar isolator from a car when the electronics failed
(Ford). I opened the box to find a relay with normally open contacts. I
followed the PCB tracks to find out which wires this switched and joined
then. The car then worked OK. To add some security, I fitted a hidden switch
to join these wires.

Yes Nick,
if its just off centre on passenger side, then
its the control unit for the Rover alarm immobilizer system,

if your having lots of intermittent electrical faults, then check the
fusebox, it could be dirty or it could be damaged pull the fuses and inspect
the terminals,

Checked the fuse box.... mainly it is shorts, it started when i pulled the
radio out so i can only guess that i distirbered something behind the dash.

Regarding this box... is there anyway of getting rid of it.... just to
decomplicate the wiring.. else can someone tell me what contacts I can jump
on the end of the cable to bypass this box.

Thanks

Nick

I suppose you could pull the connection plug and loop across the immobilizer
connections, but I have never done this, so unless someone else in the group
can advise you, I think an alarm specialist is the next stop,
