I just noticed something that worries me slightly. There is a mounting
bracket on the engine. If you look at it from the front - the screws that
keep the top of the engine fastened to the rest of it (above the
sparkplugs), the right-most fastenig screw (just to the left of the
thermostat housing) has an L-shaped bracket attached to it.
The bracket has an ablong slot, and is attached straight forward and upward
(turn the letter L 90 degrees counterclockwise on the X axis, and you know
how).
The bracket seems reasonably sturdy (about 1.5 - 2 mm thick) and it seems
like it could be old enough to have been part of the original engine
enstallation.
Is this bracket supposed to hold something? If yes, what?

That bracket (two of them on top, one on the bottom) are supposed to hold
the weather protection shield. It's just a sheet of plastic that covers the
front of the engine in order to protect the electrics against the wet stuff
such as rain or snow. Very useful in the winter.

It certainly IS part of the original engine installation - literally.

Yes.
The motor.
It (and it's pair on the other rocker cover stud) are what the motor
hangs from as they lower it into the car when they install it on the
production line!
