Just purchased a 1991 mini cooper very cheaply from a friend of a friend but
basically bought blind, it looks alright and runs ok but havent got a clue
yet what problems could be lurking, it has no mot or tax so its off the road
now and as I'm in no rush thought it could be a bit of a project.

Bodywork: The sills look pretty badly (on the surface) rusted when the
carpet is lifted on the inside but 'seem' sound from the outside underside.
The door skins are rusted badly on both doors and theres also spot rust
bubbling the paint work in several places round the windscreen on the wing
etc...

Brakes: Feel a bit spongy, they have to be pressed hard to get any decent
response but no squeels or funny noises.

Suspension: seems to be non existant at the front, certainly doesnt move
when pushed down - is that normal?

Exhaust: noisy, havent established whether this is a sport add-on or just
holey.

Engine: seems a bit rough but starts ok (with a battery pack or jump start -
battery is crap if left even just over night) when ignition is turned off
does continue to run a little sometimes and splutter to a halt.

So my question is where do I start? Its under cover but not completely
protected from elements, thought I'd try first to remove rust to stop
further damage any hints in doing this? Can doors be bought easily second
hand (its BRG in colour), saw I can get door skins but then presumably need
to weld and paint. Can the sills be repaired without stripping the car? Any
suggestions where I could get that done in the London area?

I would like to keep the car so want to do stuff right but at the same time
on a tight budget and have limited time to work on it(trying to maintain a
london bus too!).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Gwilym.

Poke the floors with a screwdriver, if it goes through, then the panel
needs replacing. Bodywork is expensive to repair, and mostly needs to be
done professionally.

Try bleeding the brakes, replacing fluid, adjusting rear drums and
changing front pads. Normal servicing.

Rubber cones need replacing. Quite fiddly at the front, and you need the
proper tool.

If it's the standard side exit peashooter, then it's probably holey.
Check for leaks around the exhaust manifold.

Change battery. If the starting problem is still there, look for a
current leak, or a bad alternator. If the red light come on while
running, it's definitely a bad alternator.

Run-on is a symptom of bad timing. Adjust timing.

Door skins are available and arn't too bad top fit. They do need a lot af
car to get right though. The door has to be resprayed as well.

Do a GOOD service and that should either solve the problem or you will find
it in the course of the work.

Mostly yes. If you're not used to Mini's, they are very stiff.

Have a look and see.

Probably needs a good run.

You may be lucky and find doors but don't count on it.
Waxoyl inside all the doors, sills, etc to stop any more rust apearing. The
only problem then is getting it off metal that you want to paint.
Sills can be replaced without stripping much. Cowboys even do it without
lifting the carpets by hammering the old sills in, watering the carpets and
Mig welding the new metal on.

The budget sounds typical of most Mini rebuilds. The bus sounds bigger. You
must have a large garage.

Good luck

Thanks for the help Nicholas and John, had a closer inspection this weekend:
The floor is all solid, what is rusted of the sills is the top skin, even
the rust on the door bottoms hasnt rusted through (yet).
The exhaust is not a 'pea shooter' and doesnt appear to have any holes.
Stuck the battery on an overnight trickle charge and now seems to be ok
(will probably replace anyway). Will service the brakes once I get a haynes
manual.
Once again thanks for the help. Gwilym.
