Hi

I plan to replace the nearside wing and a panel on our mini, any tips
greatly appreciated.

All my body repair experience was on Mk 1 escorts (in my youth) so this is
new to me.  The welding is not a problem (its my living) but tips on the
peculiarities of this job would be appreciated though.

My first thoughts are the cover strip over the seam, the car still has the
original one fitted does this get damaged when removed, will it need
repainting, do i remove it all the way up or cut it near the top of the
wing, do i fit a new one etc etc.

Thanks in advance

Gary

Hi,
It's not too much of a problem if you are a welder. You can remove the seam
trim by carefully levering it off all the way to the top, taking care not to
bend it. Getting the wing to fit accurately can be a bit of a problem
sometimes, depending on whether the wing is a pattern or genuine. I hope I
am not teaching granny to suck eggs if I suggest you plug weld the seams and
not weld along the edges. Plug welding is a lot stronger than seam welding
and does not affect the thickness of the seam when you come to replace the
seam trim.
Hope this is of some help.

Assuming it is a Mini with concealed hinges it is pretty straight
forward. The finishing strip is held on with clips, just gently prise it
off with a big flat blade screw driver. You will need to remove the door
to get access to the fold on the A post. This often snaps off the studs
on the hinges, so a new pair of hinges might be worth getting, you may
be able to drill out any broken studs and relapce, but it is a pain. In
order to get access to the hinges, hack the A panel off before undoing
the hinge nuts.

Other than that, just make sure the bits are properly alligned before
welding and buy heritage panels if you can afford it, the fit is easier
than the el-cheapo panels from your auto factors.

Mini Restoration Manual (Haynes Resto Series) by Lindsay Porter is a
good book if you like to read first..

Have fun
Drew.

That must be some wing, held on by 7 or 8 spring clips,  :-)

My advice is ,
Use genuine parts, it makes a difference when assembling them back on to the
car,

Jacko,
My apologies,
I was joking,
I did understand about the clips under the seam finishers,
I find these clips dig in to the metal and cause most of the rust problems,
we generally fit these finishers back using panelbond,
