hello, i have a sparkrite electronic ignition on my 1978 mini clubman.
the problem comes when i try to turn over the car, the car cranks once
and stops, no longer drawing power from the battery. after my last
attempt to get it to crank, the electronic ignition unit no longer
comes on, yet lights ect work on the car, i don't have any documents
for the unit as i had the car given and no documents could be found for
it.

any help would be much Appreciated.

many thanks in advance

if i rember one of the sparkrite kits was  switchable and was an aftermarket
system that used the points to fire the coil this unit cliped to the coil
with something like a terry clip
but as far as i rember it had nothing to do with the starter motor

Try checking all the cable connections from the battery. Clean off any
corrosion and make sure all connections are done up tight, especially at
the battery terminal, solonoid and starter motor. A poor connection may
allow enough current to power the lights but not enough to turn the engine
over.

I have found that it was a bad earth from the engine to the body that
was stopping the power getting round tghe system from the battery.

Thanks for your help

Hi,
It seems you were lucky there, this problem usually results in a burnt out
throttle cable when you try to start the engine.
