Hi all,
After speaking to a gentleman today at Brighton (well yesterday now by about
25 minutes :-P). Regarding the fitting of a stage 1 kit to my L reg mayfair.
This would obviously involve the removal of the cat.. However the bloke said
something about if the VIN number had a few characters in the correct places
then only then would it need a cat.
If the 4th and 5th digits are 'XN' and the 8th digit is either 'X' 'Y' or
'Z' then i would need a cat.. otherwise I don't..... eh?!?! is this
something to do with manufacture dates or something??
Is the above true, and also does anyone have a list of all the VIN numbers
and their meanings...
Ta in advance..
Nick

I think you will find that all L reg cars need to keep the cat (give mini
sport a bell - they will be able to confirm this), but check out any of the
specialists in either Mini Magazine or Mini World, they all do a stage one
kit for cars fitted with a cat
Thanks

Nick mate, Karl is WRONG - your info is correct, it does depend on VIN
numbers. Rover got a bit excited about Cats and fitted them before it was
mandatory. Any MoT place will tell you the VIN numbers that will and wont
need a cat test (or some other person from this group). I was in the same
position as you and was able to remove the Cat legally.
cheers
Ryan

I'm not sure about the VIN numbers but I have a 1993 Mini Rio.
I think it was one of last carb models before it went over to injection.
I was told years ago my local MOT guy that on a 1993 car if the CAT was
not regulated (has no sensor fitted) then it does not have to be tested.
At that time my CAT didn't actually work, (possibly due to a time when I
ran out of fuel) but it passed all the MOT's since.
I have just had my engine replaced for an MED 1380 and have ditched the
CAT for a non-cat twin box RC40 in stainless steel.
But I haven't had my first MOT since fitting the new engine yet so can't
tell you what will happen.
