idle speed & mixture question

I have a weird problem, I can't get the idle speed lower than 1400 rpm
without leaning out the mixture too much. the idle speed screw on my hs4
(the one that adjusts the opening of the throttle) is backed off fully so
it's not affecting the idle speed at all. Turning the mixture adjusting
screw clockwise the idle speed decreases but the mixture gets far too lean.
I've tried 5 different needles, but the results at idle speed are the same:
1400/1700 rpm with acceptable mixture. I was thinking that maybe the
throttle isn't closing properly due to dirt or something on the throttle
lever on the carb. I have a stage 1 kit on a 998 engine, hs4 carb. the year
of the engine is 1991

Thanks

Did you take off the manifold?

Did you remove the carby?

If you have then there is a possible air leak which is introducing more
air than required.

I did when I fitted the new manifold, but I was very careful about air
leaks.

I would suggest you check again, this is a classic symptom of a manifold
leak.

Hi,
Well worth checking the breather host that goes to the side of the
carburettor. Sometimes this gets broken or split and lets in too much air.
This hose is the thick one.

Presumably this problem first occurred after fitting the stage 1 kit.

Are there any audible hissing sounds from an air leak.

I had a problem on an MOT write off I bought recently (initially as an
engine donor). It failed mainly because of rear subframe/radius arms but it
also had high CO2 and HC at idle. I eventually traced it to a leak from the
servo. The previous owner had fitted a stage 1 kit compensated by adjusting
the mixture to rich compensating for the leak. It was misfiring at idle on
cylinders 3 and 4 . It was ejecting unburnt fuel at idle. You could remove
the leads from the 2 plugs concerned with out any nocticable change in the
engine sound. As I don't have a 4 gas tester the mixture was adjusted and
tested using a gunson gas analyser (CO2).

I take it you have checked the Idle screw ??

Make sure this is screwed out and look in the top of the carb and make
sure the butterfly is totally closed (Well almost, only the slightest
of gaps).
