is this meant to light up when it is pressed?

mine does not... (1995 Mini Tahiti)

although it does come on when the brake fluid level is low

any ideas how to fix it if it is meant to light up when pressed?

Its for problems. Not a red warning light distraction, every time the
brake pedal is depressed.

Assuming it *is* meant to light up when pressed....

To be able to light up when pressed it'll need 12V between two of it's
terminals. Turn the ignition on and use a meter to look for that 12V
between any two terminals. If you find a pair with 12V across them
then it'll be the switch that's duff, otherwise the wiring needs
looking at.

Cheers,

Colin.

The little switch on my Mini always lights up no matter what!!!

Come to think of it on all the Minis ive owned it always lights up...

Its just one of those things you dont worry about.....ever

The easiest thing to find out if you are low on brake fluid is to open the
bonnet and look at the top of the brake master cylinder....:)

The switch is there to check the bulb. Unfortunately, they never fitted
a device to check the switch. If the bulb comes on when it should, then
you have a faulty switch.

The switch should not light up unless there is a fault,
by pressing the switch ,you test the bulb within the switch,
so if the light comes on while driving, then the brake fluid level has
dropped,
