Caliper in halves

Hello,

I took the 8,4" standard Mini caliper in 2 halves, which is forbidden in the
Haynes manual.
I did this to replace the rubber seal ring as I cleaned the caliper in
parrafin.

Does anyone know the torque setting of the 2 bolts that hold the halves
together?
The bolt heads are 5/8".

Thank you!

Bolts are usually torqued by the diameter of the bolt also the markings
on the head which indicate the tensile strength of the bolt.

So with both these fact known the torque will be known.

Think you may find that the bolts are 5/16 dia and high tensile - should
be somewhere around 25 ft/lbs.

I remember reading somewhere,, that the calliper halves are pressed together
with something like a 2 ton press,
then the bolts are put in and torqued up,
obviously the bolts could not achieve this type of pressure with a torque
wrench, but they could maintain it,
a similar procedure with the fuel distributor on early Bosch "K" jet systems
if anyone remembers ever taking one to bits,

Seems a bit excessive.  The seal between the 2 halves is normally made with
an O ring. My tutor at College did some Morris Minor ones while I was there
and he just tightened them up with a ring spanner on assembly he used a
locking compound on the calliper bolts to stop them coming undone.

It used to be quite normal to buy kit with longer bolts seals and a spacer
to put between the two halves for fitting vented discs. Ford used to do them
as a performance upgrade for Capris and Escorts etc. I believe KAD use a
similar system for using their Mini calliper with vented discs.

They were from one of the Moggy specialists I beleive they were based on
Marina items. It also had a telescopic shock conversion uising gas Spax.
They were needed due to the 2 ltr Fiat Twin Cam Engine.  Great car, it
looked bog standard except it had slightly wider wheels and tyres.

Hi,
Explanation re Morris Minor brakes accepted. Standard they were drums, and
not too hot. I worked on these cars for many years back in the old BMC days,
right back to the old 903cc models and split screens.

Sorry TurboJo and NG
I only used the 2 tonne press to explain the procedure, I didn't mean to
imply they actually used 2 tonnes to press the halves together, I don't know
what the actual pressure was, I just remember reading it somewhere years
ago,
Fitzy
