Have you tried jacking it up and sticking your hand up from underneath?

Hi, You could try releasing the engine tiebar from the LH side of the engine
and tilting the engine forwards a little bit.

sometimes its easier with the radiator out ;-(

and it may be worth fitting the gearbox end first as you can push the
inner down afterwards from
the speedo end.

It isn't a fun job, I have just fitted a mechanical fuel pump so am
just bathing  my knuckles now!

sorry, forgot to mention i did release the top engine steady and wedged the
engine forward with some wood.  will try going at it from underneath
tonight....otherwise i was looking at removing the radiator as miniman
suggested - seems a lot of work for a stupid little cable though.

As Miniman suggested, remove radiator, release top engine mount, pull
forward,
even with all this removed, its still a pain,
good luck

I do it by breaking the upper ball joint and allowing the suspension to
drop down as far as it will go. The result is just enough room to get
my girlish hands through the hole in the subframe that the driveshaft
goes though.
