Citroen Xsara WARNING

Fitzy - 19 Apr 2006 12:47 GMT Warning Make your own decisions from this information, here's what happened to my neighbour,
1999/2000 Citroen Xsara saloon Diesel, Just left motorway, and pulled in to his road and "twang" snapped coil spring on o/s/front , the sharp edge of the spring then pierced the tyre, in this case, all this happened at low speed, so no injuries, just vehicle damage, contacted Citroen dealer who said Although there is a recall on Xsara Picasso, and other models,, " front spring collars are being fitted"
The dealer will no doubt tell you the collar is to prevent the spring slipping off the strut, I think its to prevent the spring piercing the tyre, in the event of spring breakage, According to the dealer, the Xsara is not included in this recall, and yet suffers the same defect, anyone know of any other Xsara's breaking front coil springs and damaging tyres, Fitzy

I think they're quite closely related, but ICBW.

It happened on an 18month old, 25k miles Ford Focus recently too - my mate was driving but only about 30mph, fortunately.

Fitzy - 20 Apr 2006 11:36 GMT I have spent 35 years in the motor trade, in all that time I suppose I have replaced 8 or 10 broken coil springs, but in the last 3 years I have replaced around 25 to 30, springs ? poor quality metal and speed bumps (traffic calmers) perhaps, Fitzy
>>> Warning >>> Make your own decisions from this information, [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] > > Myles vinfionda@ntlworld.com - 20 Apr 2006 15:47 GMT Happened to my son's Berlingo. Pulled away from house, O/S spring broke and went through tyre. Whilst it was being winched onto the breakdown truck, N/S spring broke and went through tyre! The springs were under warranty, but he had to buy the new tyres.
Fitzy - 20 Apr 2006 17:05 GMT Thanks for your feedback people, I wonder how many more are out there, ??????????????????? Fitzy

The springs were under > warranty, but he had to buy the new tyres. rickety - 20 Apr 2006 17:57 GMT while I owned a Ford Windstar van in Canada, there was a recall to fit a collar on the front springs. The recall clearly said it was to prevent the tire damage by the broken spring. It appears as though that is believed to be the major issue when the spring breaks.

The recall clearly said it was to >prevent the tire damage by the broken spring. It appears as though that >is believed to be the major issue when the spring breaks. My 406 estate, both front springs snapped within a month of each other last year but snapped "safely" at the top. When they snap at the bottom there is a problem as the spring tapers at that end and that allows the end to pierce the tyre.

TurboJo - 20 Apr 2006 18:40 GMT Why is this being cross posted to the mini newsgroup, can't you use alt.autos.citroen?
I can understand the cross post to alt.autos.new-mini as the Xsara looks similar is about the same size and comes in a diesel version.;)
> Warning > Make your own decisions from this information, [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > tyres, > Fitzy Fitzy - 20 Apr 2006 20:49 GMT Hi TurboJo sorry mate, the cross posting was initially to inform as many people as possible, as there are quite a few mini people with Peugeot, Renault, Citroen, cars that should be aware of this defect, and vice versa, Regarding the new mini crew,,, well I am an engineer, and regardless of what car it is, I will give advice if I can, some one there might just have one of these defective cars at home, its about being aware, doesn't mean I like BMW Minis, ;-) Fitzy
