Hey Jim as you say your father was born in Newcastle, are you a fan of
Michael
Caine's other masterpiece, being the 1971 classic "Get Carter" which was of
course filmed in Newcastle in 1970! (Lots of Mini's feature, both cars and
skirts!) I would love to visit Newcastle and see the sights like the great
bridges there, oh and that amazing multi-storey high rise car-park at
Gateshead, where Caine threw that bloke who used to be in Corrie (Brian
Mosely as Alf?) off the top and he flattened a black Ford Zephyr/Zodiac and
killed most of it's occupants too. I here the locals there want the
car-park
demolished, but there's a "Get Carter" preservation group who want it
restored. I do hope it doesn't get pulled down, otherwise I won't bother
visiting if it does.
So do you like the original "Get Carter" too Jim?

To be honest I only managed to watch the first 5 mins of it last time it
was on TV. Reading your description though, I've just queued it up in
eMule :-) Give it about a week and I'll let you know.
Cheers Jim

Oh it's brilliant, lots of violence, bleakness and gals in Mini-Skirts etc
and there's that amazing soundtrack whilst he's travelling to Newcastle by
train. Definitely one of my favourite movies, after The Italian Job of
course.

I knew you'd enjoy it as it's a classic, but do you know it got remade badly
with Sylvester Stallone in the leading role, but with no Gateshead
Multi-Storey high-rise car park death action or Mini-Skirted girls etc, yes
the Yanks made a pigs ear of it much like the mess they made of "The Italian
Job" a few years back.

I was indeed aware of this. I usually make a point of NEVER watching
remakes, especially of classic British films, they only serve to annoy
me. The Italian Job being the most obvious, I vowed never to watch the
remake, along with Hitchhikers Guide etc etc
The next thing I suppose, after the Enigma machine rip off film will be
a remake of how the merkins invented the bouncing bomb and how Barnes
Wallace was battling Whittle to become president !!
:-)
