hi all,
in the process of the above but ran into bother with the hub nut on the
driveshaft- ie its tight!
My question is, is it safe enough to just have one side of the car on an axle
stand and the other on the ground in order to lock the driveshaft to knock
off the nut and remove the hub?
also, as a measure is the size of this about 13/8"?

Hi
The best way is to remove the wheel centre,
have the car on the ground , with some one pressing the brake,
then apply the socket,
should come off quite easily and safely this way,
and the same procedure to tighten it,

I use a piece of steel channel interleaved between the wheel studs
(wheel off of course) and bearing on the ground. Never had a problem
but if your worried about the threads on the studs just put the nuts
back on.
It also works with angle iron and even wood but I don't really
recommend it.
The best method to loosen the nut is an air impact wrench but not
everyone has one available.

The steel channel between the wheel studs is also very useful when removing
and refitting the 9/16 bolts holding the disc to the hub,

I removed the nut with the car (and wheel+tyre) on the floor, so the heavy
front prevents the wheel from turning. Have someone stand on the brake or
apply the handbrake and use a rod to lengthen the arm and force you apply.
