Help required.

I have a pre-engaged starter motor on my '89 Mini 1000 and when I turn the
ignition key it just clicks. It takes several attempts at turning the key
before the motor turns. Can anyone explain what is causing this and is
there an easy fix?

Cheers

Hi In1gaw,
i had exactly the same problem with my '94 mayfair 1275.  unfortunately i
never did solve the problem before i sold her... but i did have a lot of
suggestions
is your battery in tip top condition.
i even tried swapping the starter(and solenoid - its one unit for pre
engarged) for a refurb - no joy.
check the main battery cable running underneath the car for splits - a small
short circuit could drain battery power.
clean all connections - ie spades to and from the starter - and alternator.

Good advice there RS,
another thing to check is the engine to body earth strap,
usually runs along the top engine stabilizer,
I normally just fit an additional earth from anywhere on the inner wing, to
a bolt on the clutch housing,

Ofcourse - good advise fitzy.
This is a common prob. ie bad earths,
Ballbag had this prob. To clarify - i did change the old, and add another to
my mayfair and on the battery and it still had an intermittent prob. shame i
never sorted it really.
