gearbox wear

howdy
i have just started examining the gt gearbox for wear/damage etc.
having never opened one before i am wondering what is
acceptable/unacceptable wear/damage on the cogs.  how do i know if a
cog needs replacing or not.
Also with the gt box, are the cogs different than the 998 box, i.e.
can i interchange them.  1980 gt, 1978 998.

The gear teeth in those boxes are well hardened, and should wear well
unless oil changes have been badly neglected. Examine the teeth for
obvious chips, pitting, wear ridges and scoring. If the faces of the teeth
are nicely smooth and shiny, they're fit for re-use.

The main points of wear are the bearings and the baulk rings. It's usual
to replace these components as a matter of course when reconditioning a
box.

You can get high-tech bronze alloy baulk rings from Minispares nowadays,
which are supposed to be a lot harder wearing that the standard sintered
steel parts.

You can swap the gears as an entire set, but don't mix-and-match between
them. (with the exception that you can swap the diff as long as you use
the pinion that goes with it).

I would use the gt cogs (the complete setup).
GT boxes are 'close ratio' (just a longer 1st gear on gt's).  Use the 3.44FD
too.
If you are lucky it will be an A+ c/r box.
You can tell if yours is an A+ c/r gearset as the part no on the laygear is
DAM3618 i believe.  It is stamped on it.
These are relatively much rarer that the earlier non-A+ c/r gearset due to
the fact they were in production for a very short time.
They are very strong, if you recon the box it will take whatever the
(tuned?) 998 will ever throw at it.
As AD has already said though, it is the bearings and baulk rings that often
require checking & replacement when reconning a mini gearbox.

Hrm, I've got a box in bits here ( nope not for sale, for rebuild! ) that
has DAM 3168 stamped on it? Given it's similarity, do you think that'd be
a+? :) - The box casting no itself is DAM2886

If it is, all the better for me!

will double chech this for you, A+ boxes dont have 'pointy' teeth.  the tops
of the teeth have a chamfer to both sides.  If you have an A+ and an A
gearset together and compare the difference is obvious.

Ive looked into it and yours is the right part no.

1275gt A+ part no's      DAM3167 - first motion shaft        DAM3168 -
laygear

These are the only parts you need to convert an A+ box to c/r apparently.  I
would use the complete gearset from the box they're in already though.
I have one of these boxes in my garage awaiting funds so that MED can recon
it.
The fact your gearbox casting part no starts with DAM sort of confirms its
A+.

That's great! - Thanks Chris.

Seems that there are some weird but common mish mash a & a+ things in NZ.
