Ive got an F reg Mini Mayfair. 998cc

I got the car from my brother who says hes had the same problem with it.

When driving up a hill or in 3rd & 4th gear the car looses power. like when
the points are not in correct contact.

I can simulate the juddering by driving along and pulling my foot off the
accelerator and then putting it back on several times. The engine is still
ticking over so its not the battery/ power supply.

Ive tried changing the points, HT leads, condensor, oil & air filter and
cleaned the fule intake system.

Any ideas.

I seem to be fine untill it goes over 45mph or 2500rpm. The top speed should
be 90mph but it doesnt like going 60 mph.

Any helpfull suggestions wouold be helpfull indeed.
Thank you

I had similar problems with my 1990 998 City. No pinking or anything,
but it seemed really down on power, and struggled up fairly modest
hills in 3rd and certainly 4th. When I started investigating, the
first thing I looked at were the points, which I found to have NO (and
I mean NO!!) gap between them... I set the gap as per Mr Haynes, put
everything back together to see what difference I'd made, and
literally burned rubber up the hill from our house! Therefore, make
sure the points gap is correct before doing anything.

Good luck!
Colin

Have you had a look at the sparkplugs?
It might tell you that one or more of the cylinders has a problem...

I may be a mere female but....... have had the same problem with my Mini
City 1990 since January when I got it, it wouldn't go uphill very well when
starting from cold - anyway last week (problem got lots worse) started
getting very juddery, husband said it's your spark plugs or points etc but
eventually called out RAC homestart who got all his machines out and
diagnosed that it's only running on 2 cylinders and is booked into my local
mini fanatics garage next week for hopefully a new head gasket or failing
that a whole new engine.
