CV Joint Replacement

Hi peeps.

Coming round a mini (!) roundabout last week, got the old "clunk clunk
clunk" from the nearside front wheel, so assuming the CV joints are on
their way out. I'm reasonably competent with a spanner but wanted to
confirm with anyone that's done the job, that replacement is as
straightforward as Mr Haynes seems to suggest.

Anything to watch for/tips/suggestions?

if you dont have a joint spliter then get one....

It's NEVER as simple as Mister Haynes says it is.  Reassembly is the reverse
of disassembly, my arse.  I wish they'd give you torque specs for everything
and all that malarkey - I would be glad of paying a few extra quid for that
luxury.  The old addage of "snap the bolt then back it off quarter of a
turn" wears a bit thin. Speshly on rear subframes.

Scuse my cynicism.  You know it's not that bad, speshly if you're just
replacing the outer CV.  Beg/borrow/steal, nay buy! a torque wrench (50 to
250 foot/pounds is a good range, and make sure it's got Newton/Meters on it
n all for fixing the occasional Eurobox) though cus you're gonna need to
torque the wheel bearing up to about 150 foot-pounds I believe.  Just
standing on the spanner (like what most people do with wheel nuts) won't cut
it.

Um, that's it I think.

The two main things are:
Take your time. If you're unsure, don't rush it.
Use jack stands - don't do it on the jack or it'll fall on yer leg and
you'll be shouting a lot when that happens.

Make sure you slacken the hub nut before you jack up the car. Get someone to
stand on the brakes and use a bl*#dy great bar to undo the nut. After
supporting the car on stands, split the top ball joint and track rod end.
Undo the hub nut and remove the taper washer. Lean the swivel hub outwards
at the same time as pushing the drive shaft inwards. They will disengage
from each other. Don't let the brake hose pull, so support the swivel to
stop this happening. Then split the gaiter of the outer joint and, holding
the shaft inwards, thwack (technical term) the CV outwards. It usually just
pops off. Then, in best Haynes tradition, reverse the process making sure
you torque the hub nut correctly using the flat washer first then install
the taper washer and re-torqueing. This process is vital, do not be tempted
to miss it out.

There.... did I make it sound as easy as the Haynes book??!!

Cheers guys. I'll be getting my new joints this week and having a go
one evening. If you see a post saying "anyone know how to get a mini
without CV joints to a garage?" you'll know I've buggered up!!!

Bugger!
All went well, but I was unable to remove the CV joint from the
driveshaft, or the driveshaft from the inner joint (to let me get a
better aim at the CV!!). Have had to ask a friendly local garage to
sort for me instead.
Ah well... at least I had a fun Saturday afternoon in the sunshine!!

The CV is held on the shaft by a spring ring. What can happen is that the
ring drops down so that it is further out than the ramp on the CV spline.
The normal action is that when you thump the CV the ramp forces the ring
down into its groove. But if it is outside the ramp it obviously wont do
this. Sometimes you can get the ring centred by rotating the shaft through
180 degrees and trying again. If this fails the only answer is to get the
shaft off and hang it vertically to try and get the ring centred.

That's exactly what the garage said. I'd already tried rotating the
shaft, etc, and they tried the same. In the end, they had to get the
driveshaft off, and admitted that they'd had a sod of a job doing so.
They also sorted the inner joint rubber boot, which had popped out
while I was playing. For £30, no complaints really!

Brilliant! At that price, you can't go wrong. It's simply not worth the
hassle of doing it yourself.
But did they 'refit in the reverse sequence to removal' ??!!!

What, you mean swear a lot to begin with, then hit the thing with a
bloody big hammer, then hum a happy tune whilst enthusing about how
well it's going up to now...?!
