Fuel Pump woes

I have a 1991 Rover Cooper with the JC Big Bore 1380 conversion which has
twin 1.5 SU`s.  I was at Castle Combe yesterday, all excited sitting on the
grid, and off we went.  Except I didnt, I lost all power and crawled around
the track like a granny. Turns out the fuel pump is knackered.  Knid RAC man
tells me I have a mechanical pump, but recommended I fit an electrical one?

I am rather, lets say, stupid when it comes to these things, so any ideas
out there??  I see that I can buy the official SU pump or a non SU one, just
not sure what the advantages are.  And whats better for twin SUs, electric
or mechanical?

Thanks!!

1380 with twin 1 1/2`s, I would remove the mechanical pump, blank off the
hole in the cyl block, & fit a competion elec pump, you can get them from
mini sport, either as kits or just the pumps,

And "Steve68s" <Steve68s(remove)@btinternet.com> was sitting next to Elvis
in the spaceship, which I thought was kinda strange, but then they turned
to me and said:

Read the specs carefully though - if the pump delivers more than 3-4 PSI,
you will need a pressure regulator, or you'll likely suffer from fuelling
problems.

Thanks for your help guys.

Steve - is a competition pump necessary?  It says <180bhp where the fast
road is <150 ? Do you the difference between the two?

I will check what I have on mine tomorrow & post back, I got it from mini
sport no presure reg, my motor was rolling road tuned & pushing 110bhp plus,
twin hs4`s, I have fitted a glass bowl filter on the bulkhead in the engine
bay too, think 4 years ago the pump cost me ?35, its just screwed to the
bulkhead near the tank, just get the pump & forget the kit, you will need
some rubber fuel line & a few small fuel pipe clips, think the pump was the
cheap one, FAC SS501.not sure though, will post back if I can find a part no
on it.

Thanks Steve, mine was on a rr a couple of weeks ago and is currently about
96bhp, so I guess a similar pump to yours would be fine.
