Don't remember where I got the twin H4 carb that I put on my 1275 mini
many years ago ...they seemed to work ok.
but started to act funny last week ....Maybe i'll just take a peek
inside ... .09 jets and 466 needles
Does anyone know where or what these 466's are?

ABB perhaps?
That's a standard 1275gt needle.

Unless the piston has been changed, they can't be ABB. The H4 would never
have used a bias (spring loaded) needle. I can't imagine what a 466 is since
it doesn't exist in the SU listings. Maybe a non genuine needle?

Or is it a locally made part elsewhere to the UK?

Yes obviously a non genuine SU needle,  I couldn't
find it in the listings either....but the number
466 is very precisely etched.  Were there other
commercial suppliers of SU needles.  It would
be handy to know its specs. As I would dearly like
try one just slightly leaner throughout the range.

Most of the aftermarket needle suppliers still use the SU identification.
You could measure the existing needle. Just measure with a micrometer at
1/8" intervals along it's length and then you can compare to the SU
listings.

Well at some point I was actually standing there with a micrometer
in one hand and the needle in the other thinking Oh I can just build
a little jig and....then I actually looked at a needle chart..the Dia.
of one needle versus one slightly leaner is beyond my ability to
reliably measure. (yes I know how to drive a micrometer)
And even if got a set of measurements it looked
a bit of a trick to find a match.
Ok Ok I'll stop whining.

So does anybody have a place to start needle wise for:
my mini
Twin H4's
1275 motor
fast road cam
slightly massaged head

Try WinSU http://www.winsu.co.uk

It will suggest a needle if you input the engine spec. It can also
find leaner or richer needles to your current one.

Despite winsu being a nice little program, it only provides results for bias
needles. There are specs for the fixed needles, but they don't seem to be
included in the results. The H4's will require fixed ones. Also, winsu
doesn't offer an option for twin carbs.

Vizard suggests No3 or 4 needles used with twin 1.5" SU's on a 1275 with
modded head and mid-range cam. Looking at the list, a No4 is generally
richer than a No3.

Got to be worth trying as a starting point, Patrick.

Hey Steve
Thanks for the heads up about the winsu program not being suitable
Yes I read Vizards heming and hawing suggestions......but you are
right. It's gotta be as good as any.  Unfortunately out here, on the
left coast of the USA,  its sort of Mark I Mini hinterland.  Unlikely to
find another enthusiast with a box full of su carb needles.  So I just
checked with Minimania and gasp!!  they want $18 US each  for them.
Let's see two #3's and two #4's better start saving my pocket change.
Regards Patrick

Oh and for some after dinner amusement, you won't go wrong
by checking out my mini.   http://modmo.com/gallery/My-Mini

That is not far off for genuine SU needles. The UK price is about ?7-?9
each.

Does the tangerine orange engine make it go faster?? !!!
Particularly like the picture with the Chrysler Imperial.... looks like it's
about to devour the Mini!
