Hi guys,

Thought this might be of some interest to you all.
I found an old supplement from "Machinery and Production Engineering Magazine"
covering the 1997 ThrustSSc supersonic land speed record attempt. While flicking
through the pages I was suprised to see pictures of an old mini that had been
extensivly modified with rear wheel steering to test the design that was to be
used on the ThrustSSc.The article says that the tests were carried out at the
Motor industry research associations proving grounds in Nuneaton.

Picture2 -Richard Noble, director and team leader of ThrustSSC shows off the
vehicle to the media.

I doesn't say what happened to the mini after testing was complete.

That poor mini, seems like a waste of a good mk1 to me!

From memory a TV programme that covered the attempt, maybe 2morosworld, had
Noble saying that the car was his, a wreck at the time with nothing going
for it, front wheel drive so it could tow the contraption behind self
powered. The car was also tested I think at Farnborough air field in
Hampshire.

Used to work with a guy at Lotus who went on to develop the active
suspension and steering on the Thrust project. I had heard about the Mini at
the time and remember seeing pictures like these.
