There is a Mini for sale in my area that has a fiberglass body. The owner said
he bought it in Santa Domingo (mid 1960's ) He has put $$ into restoring it
but, my question is: is a fiberglass bodied Mini really considered a *real*
Mini?

Not only real, but a real collectors item!
There are aftermarket fibreglass Minis, but this is the real thing, a
factory designed fibreglass mini sold new in South America. It's
probably much better designed and built than any aftermarket fibreglass
body kit too.
If the price is sensible, I would grab it.

If it's the Brazilian GRP body, it's OK, but a UK 'Domino' monocoque is
a lot stronger.

I think these were done to meet laws relating to how much local labour was
used in the build. And there was no major industry in pressing steel.

hiya
I saw one of these when i was in Venezuela, They look pretty good, someone
told me that they were a fashion item there and everyone had one. the only
thing that made me cotton on it wasnt steel was the lack of sill seam, I
didnt get it at first but knew it didnt look right.
pity its not in the uk i'd buy it :-)
