While I am repairing my mini, I bought another one off  advertised as
a Mini Chelsea, which should be  fitted with a 1000cc engine.
But it has an awful lot of power for a 1000cc, the guy I bought it off
only had it for 2 months and told me it was quick.

How can I tell if its been modified, I  had a look at the engine
number and it starts with 99, indicating a 1000cc engine.

How would I tell if it had a stage one kit fitted, and considering
its fitted with front discs, the brakes definately need looking at.;-)

Stage one would only be a re jetted carb and or a free flow inlet and
exhaust manifold...
998 engines are very revvy anyway, much better than my fuel injected 1275!

And Jono Barspeed was sitting next to Elvis in the spaceship, which I
thought was kinda strange, but then they turned to me and said:

All the Stage 1 kits I've seen have a decent full ehxaust system (RC40, or
a clone) and a separate inlet and exhaust manifold to replace the dreadful
combined factory item.

A Stage 1 equipped 998 in good condition and well set up (on a dyno) will
produce a surprising amount of performance for the engine size.

A quick rule is that a small bore engine has the thermostat pointing at an
angle towards the rad and that a large bore (1275etc) has the thermostat
housing pointing straight out of the engine bay.  Short of that, do you want
to take it to pieces?

It is of course possible to chisel off an engine number and replace it with
something different - a very dodgy practice legally as it invalidates your
insurance to insure a 1275 as an 850 - as acquaintances used to when I was
17 in the dim and distant past.

Maybe take a look at the casting number - you may have a 12G940, in which
case the block's been pocketed as well.  Vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom.

Someone may have upped the diff ratio too - what's your top end?
