Hi people, it's been quite some time since I posted here, I'm starting to
get a bit nostalgic!
Anyway, here's my problem, as the subject suggests, I really did lose my
wheel at 50mph!
One sunny day, there I am, driving out of Milton Keynes shopping centre,
ahh, the big open roads, I hit a gravel spot, then to smooth tarmac, but
still the feel of uneven loose gravel ..I say to my friend in the passenger
seat, "umm do us a favour, look out the window and see if I have a flat tyre
will you mate", he leans out of the open window and looks; "no", he replies,
"but a nut just flew off your wheel"....
"SH*****T" we screamed as I put on the brakes, only to see my shiny alloy
wheel tearing down the road in front of me while I grind to a halt, sparks
flying, in the path of oncoming traffic!, luckily I managed to pull onto the
verge, and out of harms way, get out, and run 200 yards down the road after
my wheel.
So a broken spat, a dented A panel and a paint flaking wing later, I put the
wheel back on with a nut from each of the other wheels and dawdle home at
20mph. Now the car drifts wildly to the left and seems stiff and very
difficult to steer. I also get a strange knocking noise that I can feel
through my feet below the pedals.
So, anyone got any ides what kind of damage i'm looking at or what cost?
I'd take a guess at a bent steering rack, and it looks like a bit of grazing
to the brake disk, could this be causing a problem?

Bizarre coincidence, I had a wheel come off at 50mph in my Mini in Milton
Keynes after visiting the shopping centre!

We could make some guesses, but if you jack the car up and peer
underneath it should soon be apparent what is going on under there.

If the disk is damaged, that is certainly going to cause problems. I
would expect that the lower arm and the tie bar might be damaged too.
The steering rack may be damaged - did it pull hard when the wheel went?
If not, it's hard to see how it would get damaged.

Check the mountings:
Subframe mountings - even the engine steady bushes.
Possibly a bent rack - check and ensure tightness of the U-bolts that hold
it all in.
Bent tie-rods, bent steering arms, knackerd track rod ends, check for any
play in ball joints.. etc.
