Please forgive me if this subject has been touched on before, but I am new
to this NG.

I have just bought my first ever mini, (Cooper 1.3 i, 1994, black, black &
white chequered roof), and all I keep hearing from people is that they are
going to rocket in value now that they've stopped making them. I bought the
car because I love it, and not as an investment, but was wondering if their
value would increase or not. Any views out there?

Cheers,
Simon

I think it is very unlikely that Mini prices in general will do anything
but depreciate just like other cars. Obviously a 35 year old Cooper S
has done it's depreciating, but an ordinary 9 year old Mini isn't going
to appreciate.

Yes, I have the 35 year old S, bad condition minis will be not worth a lot,
how much is say a 93 good condition cooper worth? ?1500 to ?3500, compare
that to say a 93 ford fiesta, minis already if in good condition sell for
high prices, nobody is going to have to wait 50 years, trust me, buy them
now!

But a 35year old Cooper s is worth much more now than it was then.  For a
good one people pay up to ?10000.

Most classic cars turn out to be bad investments. You invariably end
up spending far more money on them than you will ever be able to get
back. On the other hand, they are more fun and they don't  depreciate
much either. The value of a real Mini tends to plateau after the
initial depreciation. Keep it in good condition and you can generally
get back pretty much what you paid for it.....as long as you didn't
pay too much for it in the first place.

Don't confuse the prices you see being asked in magazines with the
actual values of the cars. Most people ask silly money and don't get
it.

Real Minis survive in enormous numbers and more are being
restored/recreated than are being scrapped, so will never be worth a
great deal of money unless they are very rare models in very original
condition.

Here in Germany, the prices have risen since the production end of the Mini.
Of course they didn't rocket but have changed significant.

But I wouldn't call it an investment. At least Minis rust quicker than the
will gain value... ;-)

Michael
