Hi,
Your problem is a stuck carb float needle, which is supposed to shut off the
fuel when the carb is full. It could be just a piece of muck stuck in the
float valve. If the float chamber is on the side of the carb, then just
remove the 3 screws on the top to remove the cover. The valve/float needle
is inside the cover.

Thanks, I thought it had to be something like that. Once cleared should it be
good to go or do you think I should be rebuilding the carby.

No need to rebuild carb, just fix the float problem :)
Also make sure you have an in-line fuel filter fitted, to prevent this kind
of problem.

One local british car enthusiast told me this simple rule. When this sort of
thing happens: If it smells like gas, bang on the carb. If it doesn't smell like
gas, bang on the pump.
I will be banging right away after work, and let you know how it goes.

I had my pump let go while my last Mini was sitting overnight. Fabulous
pest control - the fumes killed the mice in my garage before they could make
a home in the Mini's upholstery.

Banging did nothing so I took the carb off and apart. Right away I noticed the
float was full of fuel and likely not floating anymore. Sending for a new one
today.
Thanks for the help.

Aah, So you didn't have a float, you had a sink!
Michael.

A sunk!

this new floating float arrangement should help out my gas mileage. I
might start burning all of the fuel, which is much more efficient then
pumping it out and relying on Newton's opposite and equal reaction law
for forward progress.

Ahh, yes, a thought....
If the car was tuned with a half sunk float, then it will run lean with
a healthy float. Check the mixture after reassembly....
