Indicator/hazard fault

I have an SPI cooper 1993 that has a recurring problem with blowing the
inline fuse for the indicator, hazard warning and interior light. The car
has an original fit rover alarm that is supposed to flash the indicators
when it is armed. If I fit a new fuse and test the indicators etc while
stationary they all work ( engine running or not) the interior light also
works ( passenger door doesn't work) but if I drive the the car the fuse
blows immediately. If I arm the alarm it arms and the indicator on the
dashboard works but the exterior lights don't flash. I have wiring diagrams
in the Haynes manual for the interior light circuit and the hazard circuit,
but it has nothing about the alarm. Does any one have a sugestion of where
to look first to try to rectify.

Electrical faults are always a pain, but does everything else electrical
work properly on the car?  On my 90' Mainstream Cooper, I had no rev.
counter due to a blowing fuse that turned out to be due to the wiper motor
park switch being faulty.  Once that got replaced, not only did my wipers
park themselves, but the rev. counter worked too.

Always one to blow when your windscreen wipers ice to the screen without you
realising - blowing the fuse for the rev counter and if memory serves, the
heater fan as well.  I wonder how many times I have done that ;)

I'm sorry, but I don't have a wiring diagram for a 1993 car, but you need to
clear up a few things for me to give you more help.

First, you say the electrics are fine with the car running but when you
drive, the fuse blows straight away.
Are you saying that you start the car, then indicate every thing is fine...
Lift off the clutch, and the fuse blows?

That would probably be somthing moving in the engine bay and trapping a wire
aginst the body.

Is it more likly that you are operating another circuit when you drive, that
you hadn't thought of?
e.g. Reverse lights, brake lights etc.

If the fuse was blowing as soon as it was replaced, then there are simple
fault finding methods I could describe, but the fact this only happens when
you are driving makes this difficult.

I have replaced the fuse 4 times in the last week. the most recent time I
started the car the indicators worked fine drove about 200yds to the first
turning and they no longer worked. The time before I put the new fuse in at
the garage and I didn't test the indicators but they didn't work the first
time I used them. The time before that I had used the car several times and
it had been through an MOT test, the last thing I had done when the car was
stationary was set the alarm. The alarm didn't flash the hazard lights but
did work the horn. when I went to use the car a few days later the fuse had
gone. The first replacement was a week before this when I bought the car it
was already blown. I hope this helps.

As I said the interior light doesn't work on the passenger door, I've bought
a new switch for this and will fit this to see if this is the cause. Any
further advice gratefully received.

Door curtesy light switches can fail due to a bad connection.  It's simply a
case of undoing the little screw, removing the switch and give it a clean
and then replace it.  I believe the screw helps to earth it so this needs to
be rust free too.

Just a bit of fencing wire that should do.

Don't go swapping things unnecessarily.

Disconnect what you think may be at fault,
eg interior light
then tape up the connections
Replace fuse
If it is then ok, the unit must be faulty.
If not then you just saved yourself money on buying an interior light you
didn't need ;)

My money is on the wiring loom that runs along the front of the car being
rubbed through and shorting to the body.

I have again replaced the fuse today and cleaned the contact on the pasenger
door switch. My guess is that the problem is something to do with the alarm
system as the fuse hasn't blown yet. I am avoiding using the alarm system at
the moment. I think I need to know where the alarm is located and how it is
wired in.
